Harvest Day!

With great help from Squalicum high school and a few awesome volunteers, we harvested most of the produce needed. Everyone worked hard digging potatoes, cutting chard and staying positive in the rain! Just a bit more to pick on Monday and we're ready to go!

Squalicum High School students will be harvesting and delivering our crops to each restaurant where they'll meet the chefs! This gives our students the opportunity to meet great people who strive to use local produce and products, and allows them to learn about the value in the food they are growing!

One week out and we've been wandering through the gardens, seeing what kind of produce we'll have available. With such a cool and wet summer, our hopes of bright red tomatoes and giant squash have melted in the rain. But the gardens are awash in colorful greens, beans and other hardy crops!

Imagine sitting down for dinner at your favorite local restaurant and realizing that the special of the day features vegetables grown by youth in school gardens. Better yet, imagine knowing that 5% of the profits from your dinner will be donated to the Whatcom County School Garden Collective (WCSGC), which provides coordinated leadership and support for school gardens in Whatcom County.

We are SO excited to have the following restaurants participating in Kid Grown Night 2010!

September 27th: Nimbus
September 28th: Pastazza
September 29th: Boundary Bay Brewery
